About
Kelly Howling has a background working with a wide variety of horses including gaited breeds, Drafts, ponies, track horses, competitive mounts, difficult horses, and young horses needing a good start. These horses have gone on to successful careers in the show ring, and/or as family and trail horses.
Between her work with the different breeds, disciplines, and individual horses, Kelly has developed a strong range of problem solving skills, and a flexible training program. She understands that each horse requires a slightly different approach, and benefits from an individualized program that can be adjusted as necessary to reach the end goals. She respects that each horse develops at a different rate both mentally and physically, and is careful to listen to the horse when developing the program’s timeline.
Kelly specializes in starting young horses and ponies, preparing them for a successful career -- whether in the show ring, or on the trails. She also accepts remedial horses and ponies for “refresher” courses, and some difficult types. She strives to provide each horse with a correct set of basics, utilizing foundation horsemanship methods. Once a horse has reached a solid point, Kelly will bring you into the program so that you can learn how to maintain and continue your horse’s training. You are a very important component in your horse’s development and success.
Inspiration is drawn from observing and working with respected horsemen and women of various disciplines, from the local to international level. An interest in a more cooperative way of working with horses led Kelly to Scot Hansen, Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt, John Lyons, Dennis Reis and Chris Cox, to name a few. She has made a strong point of observing every trainer that she can, and is of the mind that even as a professional, you can never stop learning. In addition to the direct teachings of the horses, she pushes herself to learn all she can from other industry professionals, in order to bring her horses and clients a pool of methods, techniques and knowledge to draw from. She attends clinics whenever she is able, and enjoys regular H/J and dressage lessons.
Kelly has participated and competed in several disciplines at the local and provincial level, most recently with a focus on dressage and hunter/jumper.
"Highly, highly recommend this trainer! She is currently working with my mare, and the progress, in a short time, has been amazing ... I wish I had found her sooner." C.H., Waterloo, ON
